Malik Nabers updates status of bet with Jayden Daniels

For a piece published on Thursday, Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated called the $10K wager that Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels made with New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers regarding the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award as "silly, but harmless." 

Individuals associated with the league and both clubs clearly view it in a different way. 

According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Nabers spoke with reporters Friday at the Giants' rookie minicamp and confirmed the bet with Daniels is now off. 

"I'm educated now that I got here about sports betting and gambling," Nabers said. "So we're calling the bet off. There is no bet now. It was just another brother pushing another brother to try to get to success. That is all it was."

The league's gambling policy states that "all NFL personnel are prohibited from placing, soliciting, or facilitating any bet, whether directly or through a third party, on any NFL game, practice or other event." That includes "statistics, score, performance of any individual participant, 'futures,' or any other kind of 'proposition bet' in any way related to the NFL." 

Interestingly, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk mentioned on Friday that the former LSU teammates potentially could've argued they made the wager before they were drafted and subject to the NFL's gambling policies. 

"We’ve asked the NFL several questions about this," Florio wrote. "We’ll post further items as warranted." 

Whatever answers Nabers and/or Daniels received, they decided to publicly put the matter to bed for good. 

Per Pro Football Talk's Myles Simmons, Nabers recently signed his rookie contract that is worth over $29.2M across four seasons and includes a fifth-year option. Nabers has already bought his mother a house thanks to a signing bonus worth over $18M, according to the ESPN story,

"Only thing I felt I could do with my life," Nabers said about his commitment to football. "It was the only thing I felt when I looked at what I wanted to do in the future that I had plans to do. It saved me and my family's life. It put my mom in a house that she wants. It changed my life forever. So I'm happy to be here."

The NFL suspended a handful of players last year for violations of its gambling policy, so one can't blame the two rookies for being extra careful so early into their careers.
