Steelers’ Russell Wilson Gets Real About His Failure In Denver: 'Just Learned A Lot'
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a splash during the 2023 offseason by welcoming nine-time Pro Bowler and former Super Bowl champion quarterback Russell Wilson to their roster. They signed Wilson to a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum, a decision that made headlines. The Steelers have consistently been competitive despite lacking solid quarterback play, and now with Wilson in town, the hope in the Steel City is that he can lead them back to glory.

Pundits have mixed opinions on what type of quarterback the Steelers are getting in Wilson. Many view him as a bottom-tier quarterback in the NFL at this stage in his career. However, just two years ago, Wilson signed a five-year deal worth $242.6 million. He struggled during his two seasons with the Denver Broncos, winning just 11 games.

While Wilson struggled to win games, he threw for 26 touchdown passes and eight interceptions in the 2023 season. He was playing solid football before being benched by the Broncos for not restructuring his contract. Wilson's time in Denver was tumultuous, to say the least. As OTAs kicked off in Pittsburgh, Wilson spoke to the media about his perspective on his last two seasons in Denver.

“I wouldn’t say I am scalded. I would say that if anything, I have just learned a lot. I think that internally, you get better and you get tougher. You use your experiences and challenges that you have gone through to be the best version of you. I don’t blink. I am looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity.”

The Steelers are optimistic that Wilson can rejuvenate his career and help end their playoff drought. With his experience and determination, Wilson aims to prove his critics wrong and demonstrate that he still has what it takes to be an elite quarterback in the NFL. His performance this season will be closely scrutinized, and fans are eager to see if he can lead Pittsburgh back to success.

Wilson has expressed a desire to spend several seasons with the Steelers. To achieve that, he must prove in 2024 that he is worthy of a longer-term commitment from the team. Currently, Wilson seems like a one-year rental. After the 2024 season, his price tag will exceed the veteran minimum, and some question the wisdom of investing heavily in a 35-year-old quarterback. However, if Wilson demonstrates elite performance and shows he has several good seasons left, the Steelers might be more inclined to work out a new deal with him.

Steelers' Russell Wilson Isn't The Only QB In Pittsburgh

Additionally, the Steelers traded for another quarterback, Justin Fields. Fields has made it clear that he hopes to compete for and win the starting job from Wilson. Fields brings another layer of intrigue to the Steelers' quarterback situation, both present and future.

With just three seasons of NFL experience, Fields is an elite athlete with significant potential. If he can put it all together, he could be viewed as the future of the franchise. Both Wilson and Fields will be tested in 2024 as they vie for the starting position. As it stands now, Wilson is the starter, but Fields will have a chance to compete.
